ARTIST STATEMENT
Elena Roché
I consider myself lucky. I survived being raised in the former Soviet Union with only minor emotional scars that began to heal when I immigrated to the U.S. I live in a quiet and peaceful country setting only fifteen minutes away from the hustle and bustle of greater Los Angeles. My studio is on the grounds of my home, El Refugio, which borders Topanga State Park in the Santa Monica Mountains. I am free to paint what I love. In my mountain redoubt, I create virtually all of my floral watercolors and still life paintings from subjects in my own garden. Because of the mild and predictable Southern California weather, flowers are available year-round. Most of my landscapes are painted from scenes near my home or nearby locations in the Santa Monica Mountains and seashore. Most of my landscapes and florals are painted en plein air, i.e. outdoors on site. Portrait commissions, architectural portrait commissions and still life are painted indoors in the Studio. In my paintings I share with the viewer the natural beauty that surrounds me.
